Hot Rod Races

Race and Pit Pass Booking Conditions

  • Lead name must be a VHRA member.

  • Only one booking per member and passes are restricted to a maximum of 4 adults.

  • Children under 16 do not need a pass. However, there is a maximum of four children allowed per booking.

  • Priority given to those with membership in place at the time of the event was announced to members on 6th October 2023.

  • Bookings will be open in the first instance for 24 hours. You will need to book at that time to be considered for the initial draft of the race card.

  • Racing is limited to one vehicle per member.

  • You can add one additional driver but runs are limited to the vehicle not drivers. Additional driver does not need to be a member.

  • Any records, prizes or timing tags are awarded to the owner, not driver.

  • Incomplete applications or those not on the online booking form will not be accepted.

  • Race bookings cannot be transferred to another member of your choice, those on the reserve list come first.

  • Bookings cannot be transferred to another vehicle unless by prior arrangement, at least one month in advance. 

  • Notifications received less than one calendar month before event that you will not be racing, or if you do not advise us that you will not be competing, could mean you missing the first draft of the race card for next year.

  • No refunds on any passes. Refunds can be issued for timing tags. Passes cannot be carried over to future events.

  • A reserve list will run for those that do not make the first cut of the race card. 

  • All entrants, including any additional children, will need to collect a wristband to gain entry to the pits. Wristbands are non-transferrable and will be invalid if tampered with or removed.

  • Holders of passes are required to be at the entrance to the beach by 7am each day to assist with set up, including; walking the course, erecting fences and any other duties. We also ask that you assist with take down at the end of each day.

  • No tents, shelters or gazebos to be erected it the pits without the permission of the VHRA.

  • Only race and patrol cars in the pits. No pit bikes or other forms of transport.

  • Dogs to be kept on a lead and under control at all times.

  • Any form of recording or photography for commercial purposes requires the formal consent of the VHRA for which there may be a fee payable.

  • No reckless driving, including donuts, on the beach or in the village. Offenders will be banned from all future VHRA events.

Competing Cars and Drivers

The following is an overview of the main rules for racing with the VHRA on Pendine Sands. Full details can be found on our Racing Rules and Regulations page.

  • All racers must read the VHRA Racing Rules & Regulations ahead of applying to race.

  • All racers must hold an IOPD racing licence. See below.

  • Cars must meet rules for VHRA eligibility as well as the rules for racing as outlined in the VHRA Racing Rules & Regulations, and be owned by the lead name. If rules are not met, you will not be allowed to run.

  • Vehicles must carry a fixed fire extinguisher in the cab of the car, no more than five years old.

  • Seatbelts to be fitted, lapbelts are acceptable. Please refer to VHRA Racing Rule Book for exemptions.

  • Cars may need to be fitted with a roll over protection, harness & arm restraints. See VHRA Racing Rule book  for full details.

  • Hood/bonnet top must be fitted. Full hood required for non-vintage appearing engines.

  • Battery must be secured.

  • Race numbers must be applied to both sides of the vehicle and be clearly visible. No magnets.

  • Helmet, jacket and gloves to be worn in all competing cars. Arms and legs must be fully covered.

  • All cars will be subject to a safety inspection on Friday 21st June 2024 between 11am and 7pm. No Inspections on race days. All drivers must present a full driving licence, IOPD licence, helmet and gloves. Helmet must be hard shell exterior and of a good standard.

  • Your car must be presented in a race-ready state at your earliest convenience. Ensure that your vehicle is clean and presentable, and there is nothing loose in the cabin or boot/bed. Cars not race-ready will be refused inspection.

  • Scrutineer may inspect condition of tyres, suspension, steering, brakes, modifications, seating, gears, controls and complete a visual inspection. Scrutineers decision is final.

  • All drivers must attend pre-race briefing after vehicle has passed inspection. 

  • Racing takes place on Saturday 22nd & 23rd June 2024

  • The Pendine Sands course is 1/2 mile long, followed by a 1/16th mile time trap.

IOPD Licence

All competitors must hold a suitable IOPD racing licence. A one event licence suitable for the Hot Rod Races costs £10, (usually £15), and are to be purchased directly from the IOPD via their online application service which will be in place from January. If you attend other IOPD events and want to purchase an annual licence, then go HERE in January. A reminder will be sent to members prior to the event.

Race Classes

V - Vintage - Pre 54 engines, inclusive of all Ford flathead V8’s

L - Late - 1954 and later engines, includes Burtz & Donovan Model A engines

4 - 4 Cylinder

6 - 6 Cylinder

8 - 8 Cylinder

U - Unlimited Cylinders

B - Blown - Supercharger or Turbo​

F - Flathead - ALL valves in block, no OHV conversions

R - Roadster - Open top factory cars. Roof chops allowed, top must be down.

C - Closed Car - Fixed roof factory cars. Roof chops allowed.

M - Modified - Open top special & shortened bodies, including non-factory bodies. 

S - Streamliner - Closed car special & shortened bodies, including belly tanks and non-factory bodies.

K - Full Body - Factory cars post 1934. All  body styles, roof chops allowed.
